No Advice or Explanation

Ever had someone doing something for you, and you have  no clue what they are doing, how they are doing it or why they are doing it?  Its terrible isn't it?  Don't allow that to be you when you get a website built.  You don't need to know everything, but you should get the general idea.

Here's the bare minimum you should always know about your website.

Website Software

What software is being used on my website? Is it Joomla and VirtueMart?  Drupal?  Mambo or Xoop?  Magento?  You should know this.  And you should research the specified software with the word "comparison" on the end.  That way, you can see what alleged experts have to say about your product, compared with similar products.  For example, Magento is an amazing e-commerce solution, but it is extremely complex and a non-web developer will have a lot of difficulty customising it to suit your needs.  VirtueMart on the other hand is simple, easy and widely supported.

The Different Players in Your Website

For a website to be live and operable, there are a few key players and certain access requirements  - you should absolutely know who they are and if you have those access details:

  • Who is my website designer and will they support my website if I need it?
  • Who is my website host and do I have control panel access?
  • Does my hosting provide FTP accounts, databases, email addresses and subdomains? If yes, can I add my own via the control panel?
  • Who is my domain name registrar and do I have access to the domain registration control panel?
  • Is my domain name registrar the same as my host? If so, be cautious! If this is the case, you must have their assistance/consent to handle your website.

Search Engine Design

  • Is the website design going to generate search-engine-friendly (SEF) URLs?
  • Is each page going to have a title tag, as well as a meta description tag?
  • Are heading tags used?
  • Is navigation readable by search engines (ie: the links are in plain text, not javascript redirects or flash navigation)
  • Will the site auto-generate a sitemap in the standard format that Google can read?
  • Can I add to my own site easily?

Newsflash - Google Changes!

At the end of October, 2010, Google changed the way it presented a majority of search results. The changes made are nothing short of a complete turn-around.

Any time a user searches for a location and a service/product, the most read results nearly always come from the Google Places search engine and not the "natural" Google results.

This change means that it is now possible for your business to be found more easily when people search on your business location.

So What Should You Do?

As always, we're here to help. Our opinion is that these changes cannot afford to be ignored and should be acted upon immediately. The good news is that you don't actually have to have a "website designer" do something about it - its not too difficult to do it yourself! From here, you could:

  • Read our full write-up here: Massive Google Search Changes.
  • Visit the official Google Business Center, which is what drives the data for Google Places.
  • Pick up the phone and call us on 07 5530 4496 or mail us for assistance - we can handle it all for you
  • Do nothing and let this pass you by.
