This article introduces the basics on how to get started on an SEO campaign.

To really get good search engine results, you need to understand what's going on with them - then you can learn what you can do with your website to improve your search engine rankings.  There are plenty of website designers telling you they are experts in search engine optimisation, but how many are willing to part with the information to allow you to help yourself?  Not many.

So here's the basic set of concepts that you can use to improve your website search engine rankings.  We will try to outline these concepts in a common sense order - the order in which you should think about them, which is not necessarily the order of importance (all of them are important!).

In This Series of Website SEO Tips

This is all about planning the structure and overall "blueprint" of your site.  Sounds difficult, but it isn't.  All these pages deal with are how to plan what you're going to write and how you're going to link it all together.  Here's the 2 minute overview:

  • Do some research and find out what people are searching for when they are looking for your business or service
  • Decide what domain name you are going to purchase, hopefully having it reflect what you're going to be writing about
  • Plan what top level topics you wish to write about, say you want to talk about "Gadgets", "Widgets" and "Thingos"
  • Plan what pages you are going to write within each top level topic.  If gadgets is one of your top level topics, then you have "about gadgets", "types of gadgets" etc..)
  • Plan how they all relate to each other, what order they should appear in and how you are going to link all the topics together
  • Within each topic, order and plan what order the pages will appear in and how to link all the pages within each topic together.

One Word of Caution

If there's nothing else you take away from our search engine tips, take this one:

Everything you do on your site must be done with the user in mind first. Viewers must still be able to get around easily and everything must still make sense. Never sacrifice usability for anything, not even search engine rankings.
